Belgium's language divide is the dominant social-political fact. Brussels is officially bilingual French/Dutch (in practice majority French). Flanders is Dutch-speaking (Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, Leuven). Wallonia is French-speaking (Liège, Namur, Mons, Charleroi). NEVER assume Flemish speakers will respond positively to being addressed in French (and vice versa). Default to English in Flanders if you don't speak Dutch; default to French in Wallonia.
