Cash culture less than reputation suggests — IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) + credit cards work in cities. BUT: rural ryokan, small temples, some restaurants cash-only. Carry 10,000¥ minimum. 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards 24/7.

Not applicable (Japan visa policy independent). Visa-free entry for most Western passports (90 days).

Japanese only. Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka tourist zones have English signage. Outside major hotels/JR offices English limited. Konbini staff often patient with translation apps.

Tokyo: Narita (NRT, intl) — N'EX 60min, ¥3070 (JR Pass included); Skyliner 41min ¥2570 to Ueno; Limousine Bus 90min ¥3000. Avoid taxi (¥25,000+). Haneda (HND, mainly domestic + some intl) — Monorail 20min to Hamamatsucho; closer to city.

Willer Express + Kosoku overnight buses — half the price of Shinkansen, sleep through transfer. Good for adventurous mid-budget travelers.

Required for Hokkaido, rural Tohoku, Shikoku, Kyushu countryside. NOT useful in Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka (parking nightmare + trains faster). International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva) required — Israeli/UK/US issued permits accepted.
